BC Public Libraries need your immediate support

The provincial operating grants for BC Public Libraries are in SERIOUS danger! These grants fund programs and services that are currently free to all BC residents, and represent an investment in the future of our province.

Act NOW and let the Provincial government know you oppose cuts to important province-wide library programs and services. If the proposed cuts are made now, there will likely be more cuts in the future.

Times are tight, but the return on investment in public library services and programs is high as public libraries are heavily used in bad times,  so cutting their funding adversely affects many people. Programs and services funded by these grants are run collaboratively, which saves significant taxpayer dollars.

Here's what's at stake:

  • Askaway - online live chat reference and homework assistance
  • Online resources - 24/7 online access to newspapers, magazines, and quality, reliable information about everything from health to legal issues
  • Interlink and BC OneCard - your ability to borrow books from any library in BC and return them to any other library. Without these programs, you will only have access to the collections in your home library, unless you pay a non-resident fee to access another library system's resources.
  • Literacy Programming – Summer Readings Clubs for kids, teens, and adults that encourage and enhance literacy skills on a lifelong basis, and Books for BC Babies, which gives a free literacy goody bag (including a book, a CD, and parent information) to every new baby born in BC.
